Runway

Definition

The amount of time a company has before it runs out of money.

Deep Dive

Runway refers to the amount of time a company has before it runs out of money, assuming its current operational expenses remain constant and no new funding or revenue is generated. It's a critical financial metric for startups and growing businesses, typically calculated by dividing the company's total cash on hand by its monthly "burn rate" (the net loss incurred each month). A longer runway provides more time for a company to achieve key milestones, secure additional funding, or reach profitability.

Examples & Use Cases

  • 1A startup with $1M in the bank and a $100K monthly burn rate has a 10-month runway
  • 2Extending runway by cutting non-essential expenses or generating more subscription revenue
  • 3Running low on runway prompts a company to seek new funding immediately.
