Single Sign-On (SSO)
Definition
A session and user authentication service that permits a user to use one set of login credentials to access multiple applications.
Deep Dive
Single Sign-On (SSO) is an authentication scheme that allows a user to log in with a single set of credentials (username and password) to access multiple applications and services within a defined system or organization. Instead of having to remember and enter unique login details for each individual platform, SSO streamlines the user experience by providing seamless access to all connected applications after a single authentication event. This not only enhances convenience for the end-user but also simplifies identity management for administrators.
Examples & Use Cases
- 1An employee logs into their company's network once using their corporate credentials and can then seamlessly access their email, CRM, project management software, and HR portal without re-entering their password.
- 2A user visits a new website and chooses to "Login with Google," using their existing Google account to quickly create an account and access the service.
- 3A university student logs into their student portal and can then access their course materials, library resources, and student email all through the same authenticated session.
