JWT
Definition
JSON Web Token; an open standard for securely transmitting information between parties as a JSON object.
Deep Dive
A JSON Web Token (JWT) is an open standard (RFC 7519) for securely transmitting information between parties as a JSON object. This information can be verified and trusted because it is digitally signed. JWTs are commonly used for authentication and authorization in modern web applications and APIs, allowing clients to securely prove their identity or permissions to a server without needing to re-authenticate with every request. They are particularly useful for implementing stateless authentication mechanisms.
Examples & Use Cases
- 1A user logs into a web application and receives a JWT for subsequent authenticated requests
- 2An API uses a JWT to verify the identity and permissions of a client application
- 3Implementing Single Sign-On (SSO) across multiple related applications.
