Hash Rate
Definition
The measure of the processing power of the Bitcoin network.
Deep Dive
Hash rate is a critical metric in the cryptocurrency mining ecosystem, representing the total estimated number of cryptographic hashes that are being generated per second by miners attempting to solve a Proof-of-Work (PoW) puzzle on a blockchain network. Specifically for Bitcoin, it measures the collective computational power dedicated to validating transactions and mining new blocks. Miners repeatedly guess a random number (nonce) to produce a hash that meets a specific target difficulty; the hash rate indicates how many of these guesses are being made across the network every second.
Examples & Use Cases
- 1Bitcoin's total network hash rate measured in EH/s
- 2A mining farm's individual hash rate
- 3Hash rate charts showing network growth over time
