Human-in-the-loop (HITL)

Definition

A model of interaction where a human defines, checks, and improves the output of an AI system.

Deep Dive

Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a model of interaction where human intelligence and expertise are intentionally integrated into an artificial intelligence system or workflow. This paradigm acknowledges that while AI systems excel at processing vast amounts of data and identifying patterns, there are critical situations—such as handling ambiguous data, making nuanced decisions, or addressing ethical dilemmas—where human oversight, refinement, or final judgment is indispensable.

Examples & Use Cases

  • 1Content moderation platforms where AI flags potentially inappropriate content, and human moderators make final decisions
  • 2Autonomous vehicles requesting human intervention when encountering unfamiliar or high-risk scenarios
  • 3Medical diagnostic tools where AI provides initial analysis, but human doctors confirm diagnoses and treatment plans
