Explainable AI (XAI)

Definition

Artificial intelligence which can be understood by humans, contrasting with the "black box" concept.

Deep Dive

Explainable AI (XAI) refers to a set of methods and techniques that aim to make artificial intelligence systems, particularly complex deep learning models, more understandable, transparent, and interpretable to humans. In contrast to "black box" AI models that produce accurate predictions but offer little insight into their decision-making process, XAI seeks to provide clear, actionable explanations for why an AI system arrived at a particular output. This includes identifying the input features that most influenced a decision, visualizing internal model processes, or generating human-readable justifications.

Examples & Use Cases

  • 1An AI-powered credit scoring system providing a clear breakdown of factors that led to a loan approval or denial (e.g., income, debt-to-income ratio)
  • 2A medical AI assistant explaining its diagnosis of a disease by highlighting specific regions of interest in an X-ray image
  • 3An autonomous vehicle system providing a rationale for an emergency braking maneuver, indicating which sensors and objects triggered the action
