Deepfake

Definition

Synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else's likeness.

Deep Dive

Deepfake refers to synthetic media, typically images or videos, where a person's likeness in existing media is digitally manipulated and replaced with someone else's using artificial intelligence. This advanced form of media manipulation often leverages deep learning techniques, particularly Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), to create highly realistic and convincing fabrications that can be difficult to distinguish from genuine content. The underlying algorithms learn to map facial features and expressions from a source to a target, enabling the creation of videos where a person appears to say or do something they never did.

Examples & Use Cases

  • 1Creating a video where a celebrity's face is superimposed onto an actor's body in a film
  • 2Generating a fake news clip of a political figure saying something they never actually uttered
  • 3Virtual try-on experiences where a user can see how clothes look on their own dynamically generated avatar
