GMV
Definition
Gross Merchandise Volume. The total value of merchandise sold through a platform.
Deep Dive
GMV is a metric used in e-commerce to measure the total dollar value of everything sold through a marketplace over a certain period. While it shows the scale of the platform, it does not represent the company's actual revenue, which is usually a small percentage of GMV.
Examples & Use Cases
- 1eBay reporting a record-breaking GMV during the holiday shopping season
- 2A new marketplace startup tracking GMV to show investors the volume of trade on their platform
- 3Calculating the take-rate (revenue) as a percentage of the total GMV
